Central Asia—Often bypassed by society, orphans are not always given the same opportunities as other children. But for Akeem, one opportunity led him to our heavenly Father.

Longing
“When the announcement was made that some kids in the orphanage would go to summer camp, I froze,” shares Akeem. “Deep inside I wanted nothing more than to go.” As Akeem dreamt of swimming, games, and making new friends, he was unaware that the Lord was directing his path. Born with a stutter, he had difficulty telling the leaders in the orphanage of his excitement.

Who knew me?
“When the list was read of those who had sponsors for summer camp, I stood still,” he continues. “When I heard my name, I could not believe it. Who knew me? Who would spend money on a stuttering 12-year-old boy?” Akeem was overwhelmed with joy. A Christian family chose to sponsor his trip. “I couldn’t wait to say thank you,” adds Akeem.

At camp
Akeem will always remember his camp experience. Smothered with love and attention, he found friends, and played games.

But most important, he learned that there is a Savior who loves him. “I learned that there are people who care. I learned that I can sing in the midst of tears. I learned to talk to God. And I learned that I do not stutter when I read God’s Word!” Akeem says.

Akeem completed a Bible League Bible study at camp, and received his very own New Testament. “I love to read books, but we do not have many in the orphanage,” he adds. Akeem treasures his new book filled with beautifully illustrated pictures and Scriptures. As he reads and studies God’s Word, he connects with Jesus Christ—creating a spiritual foundation for his life.

Please pray for Akeem, that he will have the courage and strength to be a light for Christ in the orphanage. Pray that he will stand strong in his faith and continue growing in spiritual maturity as he absorbs and applies the life-giving Word of God.

Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.
